What's the chance of the Adena Indians being related to the Stonehenge builders

What's the chance of the Adena Indians being related to the Stonehenge builders?
Both societies built enormous earthworks. Ditches. Mounds. Roads. One society added enormous stones, the other didn't. The trouble is: one lived long ago in Great Britain. The other about two thousand years ago....in the United States. One (probably stupid) idea is that the British floated across the ocean and set up in the US. But they lost the big stone structures in the process. I look at the British works. I look at the US works. They look very much the same!

Those parallels will exist between most ancient cultures. It doesn't mean they had contact or are related to each other. In the settlement of the New World, many people believed similar things. It's called the myth of the mound builder. The mounds were not attributed to the natives, and this myth was used as justification for removal. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mound_builder_%28people%29#Alternative_explanations Henges are not uncommon in North America, but they are usually made of wood and not stone. The woodhenge at Cahokia is a good example.

Not very likely to be a connection. For one thing, British monuments are 2-3000 years older than the US ones. By the time the US ones were made, they had stopped building them in Britain by 1000 years, and they were almost as mysterious to the population of the time as they are to us today. Also,if the US monuments were built by ancient Brits from abroad you'd expect to find caucasian skeletons. Now some native tribes do carry a mtdna X2 which is considered European...but it's not very common in western Europe.

Should there be a railroad train tunnel from Australia to Seattle for folks who have a fear of flying

Should there be a railroad train tunnel from Australia to Seattle for folks who have a fear of flying?
With bullet trains becoming more popular all the time, and these "mag-lev" trains of the future still being developed, don't you people think that someday there will be a gigantic tunnel for high speed trains that runs through the Pacific Ocean? They already have one between Great Britain and France, right? In my vision, this amazing railroad of the future would run (at about 423 miles per hour) between Sydney, Australia and Seattle, Washington, with a lovely 1-day stopover in Hawaii. Free hula dance shows, the works.

hahahahaha so funny
2 :
You do realize how hard that would be to stretch a single underwater train tunnel all the way across the Pacific Ocean don't you?
3 :
Flying bites, so a nice train ride would be great. But the speed could be much greater, even faster than a plane... A plane is limited by it's speed through the atmosphere, a large plane with a meaningful passenger carrying capacity is limited by aerodynamic drag. There's the "space hop" option, where the plane would skip along the top of the atmosphere, avoiding drag and able to fly much faster, but still not as comfortable as a train. Think 5,000 mph! Create a vacuum inside the train tunnel, no aerodynamic drag, and maglev propulsion. Fantastically expensive, but in some future with near unlimited energy and will, it is theoretically possible. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vactrain
4 :
It's a nice flight of fancy, but not realistic. The Discovery channel did a extreme engineering show on the possibility of a transatlantic tunnel - a much shorter trip. The show estimated that it would take a Billion tons of steel and 12 Trillion dollars. Your Aussie tunnel would cost say, 50 Trillion; or the Gross National product of the entire world 2 times over. I do not think it will happen. Much more likely, there would be a tunnel connecting Australia and Indonesia; then a land route all the way to the Bering strait. Keep dreaming...
5 :
In fact, such a tunnel is well under way. It will link up with the Sydney-Tokyo super-tunnel and the Perth-London AquaTrain. Once the New York-London AtlanTrak is complete in 2011, you will be able to circle the globe by train. Seattle was chosen because of the close cultural affinity between Washington State and New South Wales.

Who is behind the current UK-Russia friction

Who is behind the current UK-Russia friction?
It's gone so far that Russia has closed down the British Council offices in Russia. It was Britain who started it - over the execution in England of a Russian spy who'd switched to work for the UK. He was a dreadful individual - a traitor to his country and a homosexual - like so many people attracted to this kind of sneaky, dirty work. Britain refused to extradite him to Russia and made a ridiculous fuss, accusing Russia of great wickedness in doing the only thing left to them by Britain's intransigence. Of course it served their policy well of sucking up to America by winding Russia up, but was still illegal and provocative. Many thanks Bruce, Ned and Michelle, for your shrewd and interesting comments. Yes Bruce, it's so true, that international political attitudes mirror personal ones, so very true, and sad. It took Britain 250 years to get over their resentment at being thrashed by a bunch of farmers and now (led by Tony Bliar), we seem to have gone too far the other way! Ned, you really do speak from experience, on more than one level! Michele, I wish you could feel more sympathetic toward poor old Mother Russia. She's had such a lot of sheer misfortune for so long and now, when, under her greatest leader ever, she tries to be friendly, she gets her backside kicked again. This kind of treatment can only make matters worse, and cause the Ruskies really to become the nasty types America tried to make us believe they were during the cold war (and succeeded, didn't they Michelle ??). But they are not as defenseless as Bush thinks : their power is in fuel reserves, and EU, not US will suffer !!

International politics is like having neighbors. Some are good friends and invite you over to watch football and drink beer. The rest are just annoying, so you complain about the leaves from their trees falling on your yard and whether their fence is too close to your property line. Then you get together with your friends and you all speculate that they are really perverts or criminals, behind their backs. I think many politicians miss the cold war and want to start it up again. They want to convince the public to spend massive amounts of money on weapons that never see use and to ignore how bad things are at home because of how important it is to maintain unity in order to counter the Russian threat. The 'war against terrorism' just doesn't demand those big ticket weapon systems.
2 :
My theory though it has nothing to do with your question is that Russia especially Putnin wants Russia to be the center of attention and influence it once had when it was a world super power. Their 'perfect society' crashed and burned and the Russians are not good at the Demcracy thing and have no idea how to think for themselves as individuals rather than a collective. My wife is Russian and I have been there 3 times and it is just a big 3rd world country where 1% owns 99% of the wealth just like Mexico. Putnin is still calling the shots and Russia should not be a part of the G8. Why do people in England think they are the puppet of America? Do we not each benefit from our alliance? We are cousins and have similiar interests around the world.
3 :
russia's econmy is improving and putin feels in a stronger position to devote more time to international politics it has started this by supporting iran (to annoy US) and is retalliating to UKs refusal to return turncoat spy it is tit for tat but russia's agenda is to build a strong world image lost after much of it's states separatedin the nineties it is good old cold war posturing

They left a whole way of life. Cricket, Christianity, and a functioning economy. Unfortunately Robert Mugabe has thrown the economy away and Zimbabwe deteriorates by the day. Starvation, hyperinflation, and a government becoming more violent as time goes by are problems faced by Zimbabweans today. The one good thing about Zimbabwe is that it can be used as an example of what doesn't work by South Africa. Looking back, independence is the worst thing that ever happened to Zimbabwe.

Why can't universal healthcare work in the US

Why can't universal healthcare work in the US?
I watched a documentary on PBS on the show called "Frontline", and it examined the Pro's and Con's of universal health care in about 5 countries. Great Britain, Germany, Taiwan, Japan, and I forget the other one. In all 5 countries, universal health care works! It is not perfect, and they do pay hire taxes, but it works! I do not know about you, but I would rather pay higher taxes to help out those who are less fortunate. I'm not a man of the bible, but doesn't it say somewhere that we should help our fellow men? There are people out there working 2 to 3 jobs to take care of their families, and they can't afford health insurance. Maybe their jobs do not offer it, or it's too expensive. I just think that the pharmaceutical companies are too fucking greedy. What do you all think?
Politics - 29 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
It can't work because working class Americans don't want to pay for everyone to get health care if it has to come out of their pocket
2 :
To many insurance companies would lose $ and the economy would suffer.
3 :
Our elected officials are heavily lobbied by industries that have no interest in universal health care since it would mean they will lose money. Pharmaceutical companies, insurance companies, lots of others. We need universal healthcare, though. Badly.
4 :
The Bible does say to give out charity, but it also says not to steal. Universal Healthcare is theft, NOT charity. Learn the difference. If you believe in charity, voluntarily donate some of YOUR money to the poor. But when you start touching MY money, it is theft.
5 :
Did it mention how your health care is controlled by the government not you? Did it mention that in each of those countries they are denying people with "high risk" because they are too costly to treat- we treat them here though and all of us are required to pay higher insurance premiums because of it. Did it tell you that in each of those countries they are turning to free market solutions to fix the many problems with their socialized medical systems? Did it tell you about the wait lines and the number of people who travel to the US and other places to get operations because they cannot wait?
6 :
I think it would be better to lower the prices of health care than give people money to pa for it. but since that's not going to happen so we should at least try. If it doesn't work it will be because people complain about helping others.. there will be those who try to abuse it, but there are people who abuse everything. you can't make everything illegal because 1 person abuses it.
7 :
Universal healthcare would be a nightmare. It would take months to see a doctor, the system would be overloaded and the care would be substandard. Look at Canada, their healthcare system is overburdened thanks to socialized medicine.
8 :
It will work when corporations and large employers start bitching loud enough to the federal government about the price they are paying for their employees share.
9 :
I think it would be great if we could ensure that all of the people in this country have the same standard of living. They all have access to food, safe shelter, and health coverage. Some people disagree because they think that people have to work hard to have those things, even though those things are necessary for survival and without them people are useless leaches milking off government money. Some people also are afraid that allowing everyone to have access to heath care and raising our taxes would turn us into a socialist state. These people, however, have no idea what a socialist state entails and are fearful of something that will never happen. Sadly, these people have the biggest podiums and the most followers and they are more capable of preventing this from happening.
10 :
We spend more per capita right now in tax dollars on medical care than any other country on the planet, so the pay more taxes is pure BS with regard to health care. The only way our taxes would go up is if our system (which happens to be the least effecient system on the planet) didn't change a thing except to put 40 million uninsured Americans into the present system using tax payer dollars. If the medical system here were like any other economy, it would have been streamlined long ago. We lag every other major industrialized nation is simple effeciency enhancing things like electronic medical record storage. Name one other major industry in this country that can make that claim. The only things we do well are the procedures where the profit margins are high, and we lag in every other service category, and sometimes these higher profit margin procedures aren't the best ones for a particular patient, but when it pays more....
11 :
If they pay higher taxes and still have to wait for specialized care, how is that working? Did you remember the part of the show that explained how many of the socialized health care recipients come to America for transplants? Even better, if you have ever seen Michael Moore 'sicko', he claims to have gotten fast health care from these overseas facilities - only problem with the entire movie?!?!? Foreigners are not entitled to the health care in these countries because WE DONT PAY TAXES THERE - Ask Michael Moore to explain how much it cost him to get those 'actors' seen in the UK or Venezuela.
12 :
It "works" huh?..... Define "works". Does it "work" when you have to wait too long for an appointment? Does it "work" when your health care USED to be the best in the world, is REDUCED to being "like the others"? Does it "work" when you are FORBIDDEN from having the option to pay out-of-pocket to get a better doctor? Does it "work" when your taxes are increased too much to pay for this sub-standard care? Remember... people LINE UP to come to America for all advanced care. There's a REASON why we are the world leader in care. It's called.... PROFIT, and if you remove profit, you remove innovation.
13 :
Isn't it funny how all of our politicians actually do have Universal Health Care, not paying a dime and getting good treatment for their ailments and their families. They say its bad for us, yet, that's what they have!

By all means pay more taxes if you want... But I don't want to. So how about this, you go ahead and pay the extra money out of your check... I won't contribute at all, but I will gladly use the service you paid for. How does that sound? Good? Does that sound fair too you? If your willing to pay for me then fine, but I will be honest... I don't feel like paying for you, because I should not have to pay for you.

USA is one of the most industrialised country in the world and health care is not offered to everyone. All they need to do is take a certain amount of money from everyones pay cheque and put it towards a health care system. For those less fortunate, it should be paid by the States, as other countries do. Health care should be affordable and accessible to everyone. Taxes are paid by everyone, so why is health care different. There is a election in November, it is time changes are made regarding health care issues and the benefit it will bring to everyone's life.
17 :
Because it can.
18 :
In the military (not all of them) most doctors don't care if you get well. They get paid if you live or die. They would much rather give you some kind of drug to mask the problem than to find out what is wrong. Ever go to get your license renewed and stand in line for hours while the people take their own sweet time? That is the same effect government run health care would have. There is WAY too much apathy in this country for something like universal health care to work. One of the reasons the health care cost is so high is because of constant frivolous law suits. That is the place that ought to be addressed. If doctors and hospitals (premium passed on to us) weren't paying so much to protect themselves against human mistakes, people could afford medical care. There is a big difference in medical negligence and human error. I am all for making them pay for medical negligence.
19 :
Universal Health Care COULD work in the US. As a country we spent $2 TRILLION on health care in 2006 alone!! Even IF Universal Health care cost $500 billion per year that would still be a savings of $1.5 TRILLION dollars. Can you say tax cuts? Not to mention the fact that Universal Health Care will help our economy GROW!! How? Because employers will no longer have to spend their money paying for employees healthcare. I just saw a program the other night where the CEO of TastyCakes said that 30% of what they make goes to employee health care benefits. With UHC they'd get to keep that money and expand, by opening new factories, hiring more employees or investing in other industries! And it would give ALL of us economic mobility. We'd no longer be stuck in a job just because we "need the benefits." Not only would Universal Health Care be CHEAPER than it is now, but it would cover EVERY American too!! Please support HR 676 To begin with, it is NOT “Socialized Medicine”, far from it in fact. Also, it does not mean that our medical system will be taken over by the government and run like the post office as many of our opposition friends would mistakenly have you believe. Basically, House Resolution (H.R.) 676, the “New Expanded Medicare” bill now in sub-committee in the House of Representatives simply creates a new and far more functional “single payer” method of paying for medical services while leaving the medical system itself completely alone and intact. This will eliminate the hundreds of complicated and redundant payment plans currently imposed on the system by private “for profit” health insurance companies and save literally BILLIONS of dollars every year by eliminating such wasteful duplication. This will allow your doctors offices and hospitals to function much more efficiently and serve your needs much more effectively as well. Just imagine what a huge benefit this will be! Taxes: We all know that nothing of any real value is ever free, but if you think of the taxes that will be required to support national health insurance as simply a lower cost alternative to the staggering private health insurance premiums that most of us already have to pay but which will be totally eliminated under the new system, then it becomes immediately clear that this could be a really good deal after all! Check out some of the tremendous benefits that NHI will bring and see what you think: Every citizen of the US will be covered from birth to death. No more pre-existing conditions to be excluded from coverage. No more expensive deductibles or co-pays. All prescription medications will be covered. All dental and eye care will be included. Mental health and substance abuse care will be fully covered. (1) Long term and nursing home services will be included. You will always choose your own doctors and hospitals. Costs of coverage will be assessed on a sliding scale basis. Tremendously simplified system of medical administration Total portability – your coverage not tied to any job or location. Existing Medicare benefits for those over 65 will remain the same or be vastly improved in many cases. The real irony is that this new system will be a lot less expensive and provide much better services than the largely dysfunctional system currently in place and still leave us with the best health care system in the entire world, only with the New Medicare… it will be even better! Don’t be put off by all of the misleading and often inaccurate rhetoric that you so often hear about changing our system. For example uninformed critics will ask “Do you really want your medical decisions made by some government bureaucrat in Washington?” Well, the truth is that with NHI, just about every medical decision will be made privately by you and your doctor. But ironically, under the current system, many medical decisions about what’s best for you are now being made by some corporate bureaucrat working for a private insurance company whose main concern is making larger profits by denying your claims. How exactly does that work out to be better for you?? Change is indeed often a very scary thing to most people, but when the need is so great and the proposed changes are so much better than the status quo, maybe changing to a NHI system in the USA is something that we can all think about supporting, whether you are a moderate, liberal or conservative, after giving it a lot of careful study and thought. Please call your congressperson and let them know what you think. They really need to hear from you. If not us... who? If not now... when?
20 :
The problem with UHC, is there is no such thing as Universal Healthy Living. You have society paying for those who do no take care of themselves, needlessly raising the cost of health care to prices that will eventually outpace the amount that can be raised in taxes to pay for it. Quality inevitably drops to levels that are far below what you had before UHC. For UHC to work, you have to impose a healthy lifestyle on the masses in order to cut down the preventable diseases that are on the rise in America, diseases that are a result of our unhealthy living.

i think it is a populatin issue. taiwan-22 PLUS MILLION germany-82 japan 140 great britain-62 USA 300 plus million. i am all for the gov helping the elderly, the infirmed and children under 18. but lets leave it at that. as a country, we cannot afford it. taxes would be crazy high.
22 :
Because unless you are in the upper 1% of income, you paying marginally more taxes will not pay for it. Nice of you to offer up your flat pittance, but when you start offering from other peoples plates, you are stealing. Stealing is wrong even if it is from rich people or big companies, sorry. What you need is workfare, not welfare. What you need is more birth control and less state sponsored baby factories. Why do people think they have a right to have children they can't afford? That should be a crime in itself; if I had a dog I can't keep healthy because it is too expensive, that is cruelty to animals, but get pregnant and get government handouts that will never be enough due to demand outpacing funds, being a burden on society, that's life?
23 :
those countries have socialized medicine, not universal health care as being proposed in the USA, and it can work very well. Personally, the only reason it wouldn't work, is because the corporatists are trying to make Americans as desperate as the Chinese are so not only will we give up wages to have a job, but also our freedom to get the scraps off their table.
24 :
I agree. But will people do the right thing for the right reason. Many of the pharmaceutical companies are offering lower prices for lower income and uninsured people. Even the Robber Barons gave back to society. Seems today's robber barons the oil companies are too greedy and should be regulated. The way to bring down health care is to cap the amount a person can get in law suits. That would bring down the cost of medical malpractice insurance thus lowering the cost of health care. The government should provide a low cost insurance for those who through no fought of their own can not afford market rates. People should be able to transfer their company policy if they change employment. What we need are solutions that work within the frames of our capitalist system. All these christian churches who want to control American politics and bring us back into the days of the Purtians fail in their responceibility to the poor.
25 :
America currently spends more per capital on health care than any other nation on the planet while only covering a fraction of their society. The health sector is rife with inflated cost due to the lack of regulation in the unsurance industry. The cost of medical care is greatly inflated. I hail from a nation with universal health care, your friendly neighbor to the North. I at one point in my life resided in Seattle. I actually could not get health unsurance because I was asthmatic. Have been since birth. It wasn't a we will just exclude asthma deal. I could not obtain unsurance. Likewise, even if I did, I could be have my benefits cut off, I could have premiums hiked, I could have my coverage limited because I failed to disclose I had mono in the third grade. The industry in the USA is pathetic. Here in the North, I have coverage, full coverage. I don't have to worry about premiums, I don't have to worry about being cut off. I am covered. I have never had to wait for life saving procedures, I have a primary care physician (who I chose, not my insurance company), I seek preventative screening, and testing, I am actually statistically going to live longer than my American counter part. Universal health care does work, you just have to remove greed form the equation. The question is, can the USA remove greed, lobbyists, excessive billing, at will coverage, from their health care equation?
26 :
Nothing stops you from sending your money to people for their health care. Why should your decision to do that affect me? If you want to pay into everyone's health care and receive nothing in return, that is your perogative, but I don't see how you can convince people to willingly give up what they earn for this goal.
27 :
40 million uninsured roughly 20 million family plans at $9000.00 per family that is a cost of 180 billion dollars a year if the government paid full rate for those uninsured we are budgeting 170 billion dollars for the expense of Iraq next year universal health care does not mean socialized medicine we could keep our system as it is and just subsidize the cost for those who can't afford insurance and not spend much more then we are currently throwing away in Iraq. hospitals could no longer claim that indigent care is the reason for their financial failure. pharmaceuticals no longer need to inflate prices to pay for their "free" products provided to indigents etcetera, etcetera. we as a nation just need to get our priorities straight and worry about the home fires more then the rest of the worlds.
28 :
It works here in Canada. Granted its not some Utopia of Health Care. We still have to pay for perscriptions, but we don't go into debt for having a baby at the hospital or need medical attention for anything else.
29 :
The first problem is that the documentary was produced by PBS so naturally they would declare programs in other countries a success. They probably didn't show that these other programs by their very nature require a quota system where the very ill and very old are often denied care because the chances of recovery for those people are poor. And so they die. Long lines, long waits, inferior care. These systems also need to employ foreign physicians because they will work for less. The negatives go on and on. If Canadians need critical surgery they often come to the US, because their wait time is so long in Canada. Our gov can't even run medicare effectively, how in the hell could they run a universal health care system. California recently tried it and it has been a disaster. Over 25 percent of doctor's claims for payment have been fraudulent. Nuff said.

Would this work for my History essay

Would this work for my History essay?
I have a history essay, and I want to see if this sounds okay. Is there anything I need to add or take out to make this sound better? Any and all advice is appreciated. The French and Indian War of 1756-1783 brought on a large debt to Great Britain. Great Britain began efforts of securing colonial compliance in reducing the debts that ended up leading to more disputes and other confrontations. One of the biggest reasons revolved around the Stamp Act of 1765, where an official seal must have a stamp on it when bought, including each and every piece of paper. Another reason for the outbursts would be due to religion and to get away from prosecution of Great Britain by the colonials. British colonists were beginning to move on west. George Greenville became chancellor of the chequer in 1763, and determined that colonists would stop smuggling, taxes would get paid, those in trouble- legally- would face court and taxes would regularly and faithfully be paid and given to Great Britain. The Sugar Act of 1764 was one of the first taxes that raised prices, and also taxed wine, coffee and a few other products. Colonies began to protest because there was no right authority since it wasn’t for just reasons and began to anger and rebel against such acts, believing that Great Britain should tax their own citizens in their country to pay for the costs of war and leave them out of the costs since they were not represented in the British Parliament and claiming it was unjust and unequal since they had already helped so much with a war they had not started and did not see the reason they should suffer more. The British simply needed more money and passed yet another tax, the Stamp Act of 1765, requiring the purchase of “officially stamped paper for use in virtually all printed documents” from newspapers and deeds to legal decisions on paper and certificates. Protests began in full force at this point, from mobs and regular citizens to the Virginia House of Burgesses. Parliament saw every right and reason to tax the colonials but did not prepare nor expect all of the protests received, or at least take them seriously. The colonists were seen as acting disrespectful and ungrateful. The colonies began to attempt an appeal of the Stamp Act, calling the means that anything else could be next and any right could be taken if they didn’t stop it now and that only their own representatives should be able to tax the colonies. The Stamp Act was finally repealed and ‘American’s’ rejoiced while British began to try more so to assert power and show the colonies they were in charge. Anger and tension remained and grew when British kept over 30,000 troops around their port areas, the colonies claiming it was to keep them under control. Then there was the Tea Act of 1773, colonists rebelled against this with the popular known Boston Tea Party. This set tensions for with the colonists and British to an all time high. The colonist were ordered to reimburse for the damage and figured that once the rest of the colonist found out about the many orders, they would also fall in line and follow the rules again. Trials were now military style and troops quartered close by with British getting great and extended powers, in a valiant attempt to isolate the colonies, but it backfired and only made their unity stronger. Angered and outraged with what they did not understand or see as fair, the colonist began to embark on the possibility of becoming a nation for their self and to plan on fighting for their freedom. *** Please let me know what you think and thanks in advance for any help anyone is willing to help me with!

I'd say just go ahead and use that, it sounds okay as long as you have your facts and times all right, best of luck and hope you get a good grade.

Wonderful Emily that you are actually doing all this work. A few things I noted that might make the paper even better is that the dates jump on the paper a bit. Sorting the data and events might make your paper seem even clearer. Also a typo in that the French and Indian war only lasted until 1763. If your intend was to provide an overview of events in the first paragraph and then take a deeper look in each of the next ones you might consider giving just the name and dates of all or several of the the Acts passed by parliament, without giving details, and then going into depth on the following paragraphs. An other option is to go chronologically from the start of your essay. One last thing, give each paragraph a full spacing. That makes it easier to read. (Not sure if you were simply trying to save space here on this site to fit the whole essay in.) Hope that helped !

Do you think multiculturalism is working in europe or are most countries divided?
I feel here in Great Britain we have a big problem and one that is going to get worst as time goes by. All i want is one rule for all,British rule, not special rights for the few! When I say divided I mean by religions,Cultural differences,Lack of or no Integration.

Multiculturalism in Europe? Maybe diversity among Caucasians but I hardly see any minorities in the European media and entertainment industry.
2 :
For the major countries in EU yes. Here it is failing a little bit simply because the govt won't help out. I'll give you an example, a problem we are currently having here at the moment. Because we have a lot of Turks here (they make up about 50% of minorities in immigration here)they mainly come here to get jobs etcc. But because most of them do not know German it is incredibly hard for them to live a middle classed life, many of the immigrants here are extremely poor and do not have decent jobs. Now a lot of people are saying just send them back and w/e but the fact is we need them as they are part of German identify and economically we need good relations with Turkey. The solution? I would get the govt to set up language lessons so then at least some of the Turks can get educated and get decent jobs. We also have lots of successful Germans of Turkish decent (e.g born in Germany to Turkish parents or one parent being Turkish/German) these people need to help out the immigrants that come straight from Turkey as it would ease everything over here in terms of language barriers and education. I am speaking as a mixed German (black/white) so I can relate to this. Other countries such as Russia who claim multiculturalism is working are horribly wrong, just look at the goodbye they gave to that Russian player Peter Odemwingie from Lokotive Moscow to West Bromwich. He is Russian born and bred, his father is black. These are just examples of how some countries are failing multiculturalism
3 :
I think Europe has woken up to the idea that multiculturalism is definitely not working, because it has been handled carelessly, without any long term vision and because of an exagerated sense of political correctness. You do not need to see the success of Geert Wilders in the Netherlands or to know that there are identical parties in Sweden, Denmark, Belgium, or the racist attacks in Spain or the riots in France to know that this is a continent wide issue.

why did the industrial revolution begin in britian rather than in other european nations or the americans?
a. In addition to resources and technology, britain had the right economic, political, and social conditions. b. Britain had the largest population and the greatest availability of working-age men. c. Other nations did not have ready access to a large number of ports and waterways. d. European nations provided Britain with funding for many of its technological advancements.

They had a very large number of really smart Scots to help them out. Scots? Engineering? Same thing. The Scots were kind of like the Jews of the 18th century.
2 :
Both A and C are correct. Britain was not as devastated by the French Revolution as nearly every other major European power had been. That meant that Britain's economy was strong, it's politics were not corrupt and there was not constant violent outbreaks. And Britain's key island position (and relatively flat geographical area) made for easy transport of goods both throughout the country as well as overseas.
3 :
The first letter in Britain is a CAPITAL B! And the answer is (A) and we also had some real smart cookies around at the time! And a touch of what Boris Johnson said at the Olympic handover: The French see a table, and they think of having dinner. In Britain, give them a table and they invent Table Tennis!
4 :
The answer is A; Its not B, because Russia and Germany's populations were actually bigger. At the time, I think so was France's actually. Its not C because, Spain and France also have access to waterways and if anything, believe it or not when it comes to ocean going travel, Spain actually has an edge over Britain because the waters that surround the country are much calmer and easier to navigate. The legendary skill of British sailors, is due to the fact that it was tempered by having to sail rough waters that surround the island. Its certainly not D because at the time European countries all hated each other. In fact they still hate each other, only now they resolve their difference through football instead of cannonfire.

compare life in 1900 with life today --plz answer :D

compare life in 1900 with life today --plz answer :D?
Education--- Education has improved in many ways. Some of those ways are how schools are built, how long students stay in school, and how teachers teach in the classrooms. The teaching has been greatly transformed since 1900. The majority of schools only had one room. It was usually very cramped in the rooms which were very hard for the children to concentrate. One teacher taught several classes in just one room. Now we have large rooms with smart boards which have become very popular. Smart boards make it easier for the teacher to explain and do exercises with the children. Most children only attended school for a couple of years. After that they were required to help their families with farming work. Another great difference is teaching methods. Them days they were only taught basic education but now it is very different. The teachers plan their lessons and stick to the plan. Also there were 17 universities in Britain. Women were allowed but weren’t awarded degrees! Health-- The population increased to 42 million. 30.5m in England, 4.5m in Ireland, 4.5m in Scotland and 2m in Wales. They were many effects that caused this: Hygiene, medical care and some called Louis discovered germs. In the 19th century, thousands of people died every year or suffered appalling conditions simply because there was no easy way to control infection in small skin wounds. Plzz can you tell me more about how HEALTH has changed and i have to write about •Education •Voting •Transport •Jobs/Work places •Population •Health/Hygiene

I'm not sure what your actual question is. Are you looking for more aspects of life where things changed? If so, how about family life (including the women's role and the men's role, typical activities), technology (pretty obvious one i guess, no tvs or computers back then), entertainment (also thinking about tv etc. nowadays, whereas in 1900 you would have done very different things to keep yourself entertained), work - especially children's work, transport, social care (what happened if you were poor or sick?),... there are lots of good books and websites about the 19th century, just do some research

Do you know the origins of your dog

Do you know the origins of your dog?
Some people on here seem to think that getting a pedigree purebreed is better than a mutt. DID YOU KNOW? All dogs started off as mutts or wild dogs with no pedigrees or breed definition. They were just dogs. From these mutts people started the breeding process and bred certain mutts together to create the over 100+ breeds we know today. Lets look at one of my favourite breeds of dogs that I have owned: The Australian Kelpie. The birth of the kelpie breed: 2 working english collie dogs came over to Australia on a ship from Britain. While on the ship the dogs (named Jenny and Brutus) mated. Jenny whelped a litter of pups & one of the pups was eventually mated to a local mutt bi-tch of notable working ability called 'Kelpie'. Soon everyone wanted a 'Kelpie' as they proved to be great working dogs. Moral of the story: The Kelpie originated from 2 'mutts' on a ship. THE QUESTION IS: What is the history of your dog? What 'mutts' were bred to make your dog the breed it is today? More Examples: The 2 breeds used to create the Miniature Pinscher, was the smooth coated Dachshund and the Italian Greyhound. The lab came from a mix of Newfoundlands and small water dogs that were in the area. The Laekenois are one of the breeds that was used to develop the Bouvier. btw: rant or rave if you must - history doesn't lie and I don't care for nasty opinions - no skin off my back bahaha :P

Yawn. I already know all of this. I used to call my dogs "pedigree mutts" for a reason you know. Oh and the Miniature Pinsher was developed by 3 breeds...Dachshund, Italian greyhound and German pinscher. Pincher is "terrier" in German. While the Labrador is native to Newfoundland, the ancestors were brought from Labrador on English ships. Those dogs were crossed with setters and retrievers. I've a yorkie and in the past I've have numerous other "purebred dogs" such as Rat terriers, goldens, and labs. The breed is only 100 years old or so, but its origins are not entirely certain - probably because the working men of north England, who developed the Yorkshire Terrier for catching the terrible rats that infested the mine shafts and as a hunting dog that could penetrate into badger and fox burrows, avoided divulging the secret of their success to those who might have cashed in on a lucrative side line. However, it seems likely that Scotsmen seeking work in the woolen mills of Yorkshire brought with them various types of terrier, including the Skye and the now extinct Clydesdale. These were then crossed with local types, such as the long- haired Leeds Terrier. The Maltese, Black & Tan Manchester, and Dandie Dinmont Terriers may also have contributed blood lines. At first, the Yorkie was a much bigger animal than the one we see today, but by selectively breeding the smallest individuals, the dog was gradually miniaturized over the years. They were made into a fashion dog. Women carried these little dogs in their bags and under their arms. The first Yorkshire, with the characteristics demanded by its standard today, appeared in a dog show in 1870. Named by the perceptive Teddy Roosevelt, the Rat Terriers were developed in Great Britain originally from Smooth Fox Terriers and Manchester Terriers in 1820. They were brought to the USA in the 1890's. At that time they were all their original color of black and tan. Life Magazine showed President Roosevelt with three black and tan Rat Terriers. American breeders crossed them again with the Smooth Fox Terrier as well as the Beagle and Whippet. The Beagle increased bulk, trailing and hunting ability, along with the red color. Whippet contributed the speed and agility and probably the blue and brindle colors. The smallest variety was derived from the Smooth Fox Terrier and Chihuahua. I'm to lazy to write anymore about the two breeds and I'm not going to go on to the other dogs I've owned. I'll add that the breeds we know of today were bred for a purpose. I rant about designer breeds- purposely created mutts- for no other reason other then the fashion statement and quick money by back yard breeders. I have nothing against any breed of dog or mutts, its what people breed that I have problems with- back yard breeders mainly.

OMG!! how do you breed a dachshund and an Irish wolfhound?? that's kinda impossible isn't it???
3 :
The Dalmatian is widely accepted as orginiating from the Croatian coast of Dalmatia. Previously, Yugoslavia was recognized by the F.C.I. as the country of origin of the Dalmatian; the breed had been developed and cultivated chiefly in England. When the dog with the distinctive markings was first shown in England in 1862 it was said to have been used by the frontier guards of Dalmatia as a guard dog. But nothing is definitely known about its origin. Dalmatians are a very old breed, often thought to be the very first type of dog for which man made deliberate attempts to selectively breed for specific characteristics. These characteristics were at first appearance, then other attributes such as stamina, endurance, and health. The result is a very prolific and long-lived breed of striking appearance, generally free from ailments common to other dogs such as hip dysplasia (almost unknown in purebred Dalmatians).
4 :
No history doesn't lie but what's going on today is hugely different than what went on to make the breeds we know and love today. Breeds used to be mixed with purpose for creating a new breed with a specific purpose that breeds true (thus why they are purebreds- Breed X bred with Breed X is always going to have a puppy that looks like breed X and not Breed A, B, or C). Stud books were kept, breed standards were set, health testing was done, and in general people actually cared about more than making a buck. A great example of how to actually try and get a new breed accepted in a kennel club is the American White Shepherd Association (I don't care if you agree with them or not, but you have to admit their going about it well). A great example of how to not do it is breeding two purebreds and giving the pups some stupid designer name when pups in the same litter even have unpredictable characteristics (An example is the "labradoodle" that can have any poodle characteristic, any lab characteristic, or any mixture of the breed characteristics and doesn't accomplish anything another breed isn't already bred for). If these backyard breeders honestly cared about making a new breed they would be working together to make a new breed. As for breed origins, I'm wondering where you got most of your information (Remember Wikipedia is not a reputable source). Breeds take a very long time to establish and one mutt being born, or even 100 mutts of the same mix being born do not make a breed.: The Australian Kelpie is thought to come from a few different types of sheep dogs and even possibly some Dingo blood and started out in the 1800s (not to be considered a breed until the 1990s). The story you're referencing is thought to be a legend and regardless those pups looked nothing like a modern day Kelpie. The Miniature Pinscher is thought to have been bred from the Dachshund, the Italian Greyhound, and possibly even the short-haired German Pinscher with documentation being over 200 years old. Labs started out from Newfoundlands.... in 1878 and were accepted as a breed first in 1903: As for my breed Australian Shepherds not a lot is honestly known about the breed's origin. The registries started showing up around the 1940s though the breed wasn't actually accepted as an AKC breed until the 90s. It's known Aussies originated in the United States and most accounts seem to believe they have Basque origins in Spain with the herding dogs they brought up. Aussies were specifically bred to be a well rounded and weather adapted loose to medium eyed herding dogs, and experience shows me that their dang good at their job. Working with different herding breeds I can tell you exactly why I choose them to work with again and again compared to other "similar" herding breeds- Including the Border Collie who will never take a day off and uses all it's energy in run one, the collie which is too high up for cattle work and too slow for long horse back rides in summers, and the German Shepherd who has American bred lines that can't half work these days.
5 :
The origins of Siberian huskies is unknown. So yeah...... Well, I do know that they came from the Chukchi people. But breed-wise nope, no idea.
6 :
Translation..........."My mind is already made up;don't confuse me with the facts". REAL breeds take hundreds of years of selective breeding & culling, not nine weeks in some jerks backyard. MILLIONS of people are educated & can tell quality stock from a street-dawg mongrel. This is a waste of time & deliberate ignorance & reverse-snobbery is an unattractive bore.

Is it necessary for me to take a TOFEL test

Is it necessary for me to take a TOFEL test?
I understand TOEFLs are very important for non native speakers who would like to work in the States or Great Britain and so on. Well I was born in Austin, Texas and I lived there for 7 years, and until this day I think in English and I am very comfortable with English. I wanted to take part in the Cambridge test in Switzerland but my teacher said it wouldn't be necessary for me because English is practically my first language. But I don't look like somebody who has English as theor first language and my name doesn't sound english either, would it bring problems for me if I don't take such a test?

US Citizen becoming a soccer coach in the UK

US Citizen becoming a soccer coach in the UK?
I am trying to figure out what it would take to both move to Great Britain, and also end up getting a job over there. From what I have found so far it seems that you need a job offer to get a work visa. So here is the question, is there a way to live legally in England and then find a job? Is it possible as a US citizen to get an iterim job while looking for a new one in the UK? Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated.

The simple answer to your question is No. You need to have a firm offer of a job to obtain a work permit. With the UK unemployment figures your chances are not good. Your not a world class coack by any chance ? Right now Scotland is in need of a new Coach. The UK Embassy site has all the details you need. Ian M

You need to contact Border and Immigration and apply for a WORKING HOLIDAY VISA, and then when you have the right job, the employer can apply for a work permit on your behalf.

What do you need in order to work overseas (orig. US citizen)

What do you need in order to work overseas (orig. US citizen)?
Just wondering if the process is as tenuous and expensive to work overseas for a native American as it is for people seeking entry into the US. What do I need in order to get a job in Great Britain? I have a bachelor's of science in Political Science with a minor in sociology. I have experience in non-profit management and public relations. Thanks. First, I still live in the US so there is no consulate to contact. Second, I have thought about foreign service but it would take up to a year to apply, qualify, test, and be selected and then I'd start training. I want employment overseas outside of US government, thus I am looking for someone with knowledge of what is necessary to gain employment in a firm, organization, or corporation in Great Britain. So, thank you for your initial response, but it is inadequate to what I am seeking. Diplomatically yours, Jenn

How does liberalized education work

How does liberalized education work?
I have a question. I am currently very young and attending a big high school in America. I am not yet a U.S Citizen however I am a citizen of the Republic of Croatia. I am very much smarter than the average student and I have intentions to go to very demanding and selective colleges and schools after high school, however I have a question. Since I do not believe money should interfere with your education level, and the American college system is post-secondary, I am only middle class and would probably not be able to afford any selective college even if I do get accepted. However, how does this work : If I move to a country which has liberal and free education even on high tech universities, like Sweden, would I get those benefits of a free college? Also, must I become a citizen of that country? And also, since I am a citizen of a country soon joining the EU, does that mean if citizenship is required would I get it and be able to move to a liberalized education like Great Britain and get the same benefits as the normal citizens? Thank you,,

You can't get a free education by moving to another country just to attend college - you need to have been living there and paying taxes to get that free education. But it can still be a lot cheaper than education in the US.
2 :
No, to get free education in Sweden you have to pay taxes and stuff and actually live here for other reasons than studying. However, if Croatia joins the EU, you will be able to get free education in Scotland after you have been a member of EU for three years, by applying for SAAS. How does train travel in Europe work

How does train travel in Europe work?
Hi. If I purchase the Global railway pass in Europe which allows me to travel in 21 different countries, how exactly does this work? Will I be able to take the train from one country to the next? Like let's say from Barcelona to Paris? Also, will I be able to travel in one country and see different parts of that country? Why is all of Western Europe included in this deal, but not Great Britain? Also, if I flew into like Ireland, could I take a train from Dublin into Paris or any other country? How does that work when it's an island? If I select the 1 month continuous plan, will that permit me to take the train any day or time I want during that time period? Thanks in advance. Please, for those that have done this before and have experience, please give advice. THanks!

I won't give you advice about your travel pass. but I will tell you that whenever I travel from country to country here in Europe, I go to a local train station and buy the tickets. You'll have more flexibility this way, and it may be cheaper as well. If you think you're going to see all 21 countries in 3 months (Shengin Treaty only allows Americans 3 months stay) then you're giving yourself 4 days in each country. Remember that you'll be using 1 day just to travel there and you have 3 days per. Better is to either pick specific countries to visit, or expect to spend a lot of time on trains. As to Dublin, I don't think you can actually get a train that leaves the country. I think you'll have to take a bus onto a ferry and then on the mainland you may be able to catch a train. Better is to fly to Dublin--which I do all the time--and then go on to another city. I fly from Dublin to Prague and then get met at the airport and drive home from there. Think about Prague as it is centrally located in Europe, and is a great place to visit anyway. There are too many Americans in the summer for my taste, but it's still a beautiful city. Good luck!

This was a popular holiday to have when I was a student many years ago. It was called Interail then. There were choices on duration and range, so you could include the UK if you wanted but it was an expensive add on. The way to do it used to be to make as many night journeys as possible so you sleep on the train and arrive in a new place to explore during the day - saves on accommodation. You can travel nationally and trans nationally within the countries covered by your ticket though not necessarily all trains are included. It is a good way to travel. but requires a lot of planning to avoid wasting a lot of time in train stations. By the way, no use using trains in Ireland really. If you are using Dublin for your arrival from US, then take a discount ticket from some airline like Ryan Air (example only, there are others) to the European mainland. If you want to be in Europe for more than 3 months plan to leave the common passport zone such as into UK or maybe over the Straights of Gibraltar to somewhere like Casablanca, then back into Europe so that you get another 3 months. Have a good holiday.
3 :
Interrail and Eurail are two separate passes. Interrail is for European residents while Eurail is for others. The pass is sold by a third party ticket seller; Eurail/Eurorail has no trains. The trains are operated by the various national train companies. The Global pass allows you to use trains in any of the countries that have agreed to be a part of the Eurail contract. The UK has not and therefore, trains in the UK are not included in the pass. Yes, you can use trains within a country or international trains between countries. Some trains (many fast trains, international trains, and night trains) require reservations and an additional supplemental fee when you use a pass. Some ferries are included in your pass. If you have a continuous pass, you can take any eligible train during the month. There is an excellent website that explains train travel in general and passes in particular here: http://www.seat61.com/ . It has a lot more information than there is room for here, including: when it's better to buy individual tickets, how to validate a pass, how to use the pass, how to make reservations when necessary, common mistakes using the pass in various countries, and links to the various national train websites
4 :
You cannot take a train from Dublin to Paris, dear. Ireland is still an island, and unlike the UK, there is no undersea tunnel linking it another land mass. You need to talk to whoever is selling you that ticket and see what services you are entitled to use on it. You could take the ferry from Ireland to France or from Ireland to the UK, and get trains from there.
