What did the British leave behind in Zimbabwe culture

What did the British leave behind in Zimbabwe culture?
Zimbabwe was taken over by Great Britain in the 1800's. Does anyone know what things have been left behind by the British that affect the culture today? Language, government, culture, daily life, foods, holidays, almost anything would work- Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Language--most schools are English-medium, but indigenous languages are taught and spoken in school as well. Styles of housing are also influenced by Europeans, I believe.

They left a whole way of life. Cricket, Christianity, and a functioning economy. Unfortunately Robert Mugabe has thrown the economy away and Zimbabwe deteriorates by the day. Starvation, hyperinflation, and a government becoming more violent as time goes by are problems faced by Zimbabweans today. The one good thing about Zimbabwe is that it can be used as an example of what doesn't work by South Africa. Looking back, independence is the worst thing that ever happened to Zimbabwe.

Why can't universal healthcare work in the US

Why can't universal healthcare work in the US?
I watched a documentary on PBS on the show called "Frontline", and it examined the Pro's and Con's of universal health care in about 5 countries. Great Britain, Germany, Taiwan, Japan, and I forget the other one. In all 5 countries, universal health care works! It is not perfect, and they do pay hire taxes, but it works! I do not know about you, but I would rather pay higher taxes to help out those who are less fortunate. I'm not a man of the bible, but doesn't it say somewhere that we should help our fellow men? There are people out there working 2 to 3 jobs to take care of their families, and they can't afford health insurance. Maybe their jobs do not offer it, or it's too expensive. I just think that the pharmaceutical companies are too fucking greedy. What do you all think?

It can't work because working class Americans don't want to pay for everyone to get health care if it has to come out of their pocket
2 :
To many insurance companies would lose $ and the economy would suffer.
3 :
Our elected officials are heavily lobbied by industries that have no interest in universal health care since it would mean they will lose money. Pharmaceutical companies, insurance companies, lots of others. We need universal healthcare, though. Badly.
4 :
The Bible does say to give out charity, but it also says not to steal. Universal Healthcare is theft, NOT charity. Learn the difference. If you believe in charity, voluntarily donate some of YOUR money to the poor. But when you start touching MY money, it is theft.
5 :
Did it mention how your health care is controlled by the government not you? Did it mention that in each of those countries they are denying people with "high risk" because they are too costly to treat- we treat them here though and all of us are required to pay higher insurance premiums because of it. Did it tell you that in each of those countries they are turning to free market solutions to fix the many problems with their socialized medical systems? Did it tell you about the wait lines and the number of people who travel to the US and other places to get operations because they cannot wait?
6 :
I think it would be better to lower the prices of health care than give people money to pa for it. but since that's not going to happen so we should at least try. If it doesn't work it will be because people complain about helping others.. there will be those who try to abuse it, but there are people who abuse everything. you can't make everything illegal because 1 person abuses it.
7 :
Universal healthcare would be a nightmare. It would take months to see a doctor, the system would be overloaded and the care would be substandard. Look at Canada, their healthcare system is overburdened thanks to socialized medicine.
8 :
It will work when corporations and large employers start bitching loud enough to the federal government about the price they are paying for their employees share.
9 :
I think it would be great if we could ensure that all of the people in this country have the same standard of living. They all have access to food, safe shelter, and health coverage. Some people disagree because they think that people have to work hard to have those things, even though those things are necessary for survival and without them people are useless leaches milking off government money. Some people also are afraid that allowing everyone to have access to heath care and raising our taxes would turn us into a socialist state. These people, however, have no idea what a socialist state entails and are fearful of something that will never happen. Sadly, these people have the biggest podiums and the most followers and they are more capable of preventing this from happening.
10 :
We spend more per capita right now in tax dollars on medical care than any other country on the planet, so the pay more taxes is pure BS with regard to health care. The only way our taxes would go up is if our system (which happens to be the least effecient system on the planet) didn't change a thing except to put 40 million uninsured Americans into the present system using tax payer dollars. If the medical system here were like any other economy, it would have been streamlined long ago. We lag every other major industrialized nation is simple effeciency enhancing things like electronic medical record storage. Name one other major industry in this country that can make that claim. The only things we do well are the procedures where the profit margins are high, and we lag in every other service category, and sometimes these higher profit margin procedures aren't the best ones for a particular patient, but when it pays more....
11 :
If they pay higher taxes and still have to wait for specialized care, how is that working? Did you remember the part of the show that explained how many of the socialized health care recipients come to America for transplants? Even better, if you have ever seen Michael Moore 'sicko', he claims to have gotten fast health care from these overseas facilities - only problem with the entire movie?!?!? Foreigners are not entitled to the health care in these countries because WE DONT PAY TAXES THERE - Ask Michael Moore to explain how much it cost him to get those 'actors' seen in the UK or Venezuela.
12 :
It "works" huh?..... Define "works". Does it "work" when you have to wait too long for an appointment? Does it "work" when your health care USED to be the best in the world, is REDUCED to being "like the others"? Does it "work" when you are FORBIDDEN from having the option to pay out-of-pocket to get a better doctor? Does it "work" when your taxes are increased too much to pay for this sub-standard care? Remember... people LINE UP to come to America for all advanced care. There's a REASON why we are the world leader in care. It's called.... PROFIT, and if you remove profit, you remove innovation.
13 :
Isn't it funny how all of our politicians actually do have Universal Health Care, not paying a dime and getting good treatment for their ailments and their families. They say its bad for us, yet, that's what they have!
14 :
By all means pay more taxes if you want... But I don't want to. So how about this, you go ahead and pay the extra money out of your check... I won't contribute at all, but I will gladly use the service you paid for. How does that sound? Good? Does that sound fair too you? If your willing to pay for me then fine, but I will be honest... I don't feel like paying for you, because I should not have to pay for you.

USA is one of the most industrialised country in the world and health care is not offered to everyone. All they need to do is take a certain amount of money from everyones pay cheque and put it towards a health care system. For those less fortunate, it should be paid by the States, as other countries do. Health care should be affordable and accessible to everyone. Taxes are paid by everyone, so why is health care different. There is a election in November, it is time changes are made regarding health care issues and the benefit it will bring to everyone's life.
17 :
Because it can.
18 :
In the military (not all of them) most doctors don't care if you get well. They get paid if you live or die. They would much rather give you some kind of drug to mask the problem than to find out what is wrong. Ever go to get your license renewed and stand in line for hours while the people take their own sweet time? That is the same effect government run health care would have. There is WAY too much apathy in this country for something like universal health care to work. One of the reasons the health care cost is so high is because of constant frivolous law suits. That is the place that ought to be addressed. If doctors and hospitals (premium passed on to us) weren't paying so much to protect themselves against human mistakes, people could afford medical care. There is a big difference in medical negligence and human error. I am all for making them pay for medical negligence.
19 :
Universal Health Care COULD work in the US. As a country we spent $2 TRILLION on health care in 2006 alone!! Even IF Universal Health care cost $500 billion per year that would still be a savings of $1.5 TRILLION dollars. Can you say tax cuts? Not to mention the fact that Universal Health Care will help our economy GROW!! How? Because employers will no longer have to spend their money paying for employees healthcare. I just saw a program the other night where the CEO of TastyCakes said that 30% of what they make goes to employee health care benefits. With UHC they'd get to keep that money and expand, by opening new factories, hiring more employees or investing in other industries! And it would give ALL of us economic mobility. We'd no longer be stuck in a job just because we "need the benefits." Not only would Universal Health Care be CHEAPER than it is now, but it would cover EVERY American too!! Please support HR 676 To begin with, it is NOT “Socialized Medicine”, far from it in fact. Also, it does not mean that our medical system will be taken over by the government and run like the post office as many of our opposition friends would mistakenly have you believe. Basically, House Resolution (H.R.) 676, the “New Expanded Medicare” bill now in sub-committee in the House of Representatives simply creates a new and far more functional “single payer” method of paying for medical services while leaving the medical system itself completely alone and intact. This will eliminate the hundreds of complicated and redundant payment plans currently imposed on the system by private “for profit” health insurance companies and save literally BILLIONS of dollars every year by eliminating such wasteful duplication. This will allow your doctors offices and hospitals to function much more efficiently and serve your needs much more effectively as well. Just imagine what a huge benefit this will be! Taxes: We all know that nothing of any real value is ever free, but if you think of the taxes that will be required to support national health insurance as simply a lower cost alternative to the staggering private health insurance premiums that most of us already have to pay but which will be totally eliminated under the new system, then it becomes immediately clear that this could be a really good deal after all! Check out some of the tremendous benefits that NHI will bring and see what you think: Every citizen of the US will be covered from birth to death. No more pre-existing conditions to be excluded from coverage. No more expensive deductibles or co-pays. All prescription medications will be covered. All dental and eye care will be included. Mental health and substance abuse care will be fully covered. (1) Long term and nursing home services will be included. You will always choose your own doctors and hospitals. Costs of coverage will be assessed on a sliding scale basis. Tremendously simplified system of medical administration Total portability – your coverage not tied to any job or location. Existing Medicare benefits for those over 65 will remain the same or be vastly improved in many cases. The real irony is that this new system will be a lot less expensive and provide much better services than the largely dysfunctional system currently in place and still leave us with the best health care system in the entire world, only with the New Medicare… it will be even better! Don’t be put off by all of the misleading and often inaccurate rhetoric that you so often hear about changing our system. For example uninformed critics will ask “Do you really want your medical decisions made by some government bureaucrat in Washington?” Well, the truth is that with NHI, just about every medical decision will be made privately by you and your doctor. But ironically, under the current system, many medical decisions about what’s best for you are now being made by some corporate bureaucrat working for a private insurance company whose main concern is making larger profits by denying your claims. How exactly does that work out to be better for you?? Change is indeed often a very scary thing to most people, but when the need is so great and the proposed changes are so much better than the status quo, maybe changing to a NHI system in the USA is something that we can all think about supporting, whether you are a moderate, liberal or conservative, after giving it a lot of careful study and thought. Please call your congressperson and let them know what you think. They really need to hear from you. If not us... who? If not now... when?
20 :
The problem with UHC, is there is no such thing as Universal Healthy Living. You have society paying for those who do no take care of themselves, needlessly raising the cost of health care to prices that will eventually outpace the amount that can be raised in taxes to pay for it. Quality inevitably drops to levels that are far below what you had before UHC. For UHC to work, you have to impose a healthy lifestyle on the masses in order to cut down the preventable diseases that are on the rise in America, diseases that are a result of our unhealthy living.

i think it is a populatin issue. taiwan-22 PLUS MILLION germany-82 japan 140 great britain-62 USA 300 plus million. i am all for the gov helping the elderly, the infirmed and children under 18. but lets leave it at that. as a country, we cannot afford it. taxes would be crazy high.
22 :
Because unless you are in the upper 1% of income, you paying marginally more taxes will not pay for it. Nice of you to offer up your flat pittance, but when you start offering from other peoples plates, you are stealing. Stealing is wrong even if it is from rich people or big companies, sorry. What you need is workfare, not welfare. What you need is more birth control and less state sponsored baby factories. Why do people think they have a right to have children they can't afford? That should be a crime in itself; if I had a dog I can't keep healthy because it is too expensive, that is cruelty to animals, but get pregnant and get government handouts that will never be enough due to demand outpacing funds, being a burden on society, that's life?
23 :
those countries have socialized medicine, not universal health care as being proposed in the USA, and it can work very well. Personally, the only reason it wouldn't work, is because the corporatists are trying to make Americans as desperate as the Chinese are so not only will we give up wages to have a job, but also our freedom to get the scraps off their table.
24 :
I agree. But will people do the right thing for the right reason. Many of the pharmaceutical companies are offering lower prices for lower income and uninsured people. Even the Robber Barons gave back to society. Seems today's robber barons the oil companies are too greedy and should be regulated. The way to bring down health care is to cap the amount a person can get in law suits. That would bring down the cost of medical malpractice insurance thus lowering the cost of health care. The government should provide a low cost insurance for those who through no fought of their own can not afford market rates. People should be able to transfer their company policy if they change employment. What we need are solutions that work within the frames of our capitalist system. All these christian churches who want to control American politics and bring us back into the days of the Purtians fail in their responceibility to the poor.
25 :
America currently spends more per capital on health care than any other nation on the planet while only covering a fraction of their society. The health sector is rife with inflated cost due to the lack of regulation in the unsurance industry. The cost of medical care is greatly inflated. I hail from a nation with universal health care, your friendly neighbor to the North. I at one point in my life resided in Seattle. I actually could not get health unsurance because I was asthmatic. Have been since birth. It wasn't a we will just exclude asthma deal. I could not obtain unsurance. Likewise, even if I did, I could be have my benefits cut off, I could have premiums hiked, I could have my coverage limited because I failed to disclose I had mono in the third grade. The industry in the USA is pathetic. Here in the North, I have coverage, full coverage. I don't have to worry about premiums, I don't have to worry about being cut off. I am covered. I have never had to wait for life saving procedures, I have a primary care physician (who I chose, not my insurance company), I seek preventative screening, and testing, I am actually statistically going to live longer than my American counter part. Universal health care does work, you just have to remove greed form the equation. The question is, can the USA remove greed, lobbyists, excessive billing, at will coverage, from their health care equation?
26 :
Nothing stops you from sending your money to people for their health care. Why should your decision to do that affect me? If you want to pay into everyone's health care and receive nothing in return, that is your perogative, but I don't see how you can convince people to willingly give up what they earn for this goal.
27 :
40 million uninsured roughly 20 million family plans at $9000.00 per family that is a cost of 180 billion dollars a year if the government paid full rate for those uninsured we are budgeting 170 billion dollars for the expense of Iraq next year universal health care does not mean socialized medicine we could keep our system as it is and just subsidize the cost for those who can't afford insurance and not spend much more then we are currently throwing away in Iraq. hospitals could no longer claim that indigent care is the reason for their financial failure. pharmaceuticals no longer need to inflate prices to pay for their "free" products provided to indigents etcetera, etcetera. we as a nation just need to get our priorities straight and worry about the home fires more then the rest of the worlds.
28 :
It works here in Canada. Granted its not some Utopia of Health Care. We still have to pay for perscriptions, but we don't go into debt for having a baby at the hospital or need medical attention for anything else.
29 :
The first problem is that the documentary was produced by PBS so naturally they would declare programs in other countries a success. They probably didn't show that these other programs by their very nature require a quota system where the very ill and very old are often denied care because the chances of recovery for those people are poor. And so they die. Long lines, long waits, inferior care. These systems also need to employ foreign physicians because they will work for less. The negatives go on and on. If Canadians need critical surgery they often come to the US, because their wait time is so long in Canada. Our gov can't even run medicare effectively, how in the hell could they run a universal health care system. California recently tried it and it has been a disaster. Over 25 percent of doctor's claims for payment have been fraudulent. Nuff said.
